SOCIAL STUDIES
Coup d'etat - Last week, military leaders in Thailand staged a coup of their government. General Sondhi Boonyaratkalin, who led the military action, said that he staged the government upset because he believes the Thai government to be corrupt. Sondhi says he hopes to return the country to civilian rule and hold general elections for a new Prime Minister by October 2007.
*The Plan: Discuss with students other coups that have taken place in history.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Sandra Cisneros - This Chicago-born author is also of Hispanic descent. Her first novel and most acclaimed work is The House on Mango Street. The book is known for its simple, almost childlike language that tells the story of a young Chicana, Esperanza, growing up in a Hispanic suburb of Chicago.
*The Plan: Create a Word Wall. Have students read excerpts of short stories by Cisneros or other Hispanic authors, such as Gary Soto. As students come across unfamiliar Spanish words, have them define the words and learn Spanish at the same time.
MATH
Football Season Kicks Off - Get your students attention by having them learn more about the precise measurements used to produce the balls that play the game.
*The Plan: As students read more about the topic, have them convert centimeters into inches. Ask them to convert measurements of both the American football and European football as a warm-up practice this week!
