Science, Social Studies,Language Arts, Math, : Answers.com In Your Classroom

posted Monday, 2 October 2006

Here are some sample Answers.com topics you may enjoy sharing with your students.

SCIENCE

E-coli - This bacteria strain caused a slump in spinach sales last week when it was found that over 170 people were infected from bagged greens, two of the infected died.

*The Plan: Have students write in their journals about safe food handling methods they practice in the home. Share responses in a group discussion.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Coup d'etat - Last week, military leaders in Thailand staged a coup of their government. General Sondhi Boonyaratkalin, who led the military action, said that he staged the government upset because he believes the Thai government to be corrupt. Sondhi says he hopes to return the country to civilian rule and hold general elections for a new Prime Minister by October 2007.

*The Plan: Discuss with students other coups that have taken place in history.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Sandra Cisneros - This Chicago-born author is also of Hispanic descent. Her first novel and most acclaimed work is The House on Mango Street. The book is known for its simple, almost childlike language that tells the story of a young Chicana, Esperanza, growing up in a Hispanic suburb of Chicago.

*The Plan: Create a Word Wall. Have students read excerpts of short stories by Cisneros or other Hispanic authors, such as
Gary Soto. As students come across unfamiliar Spanish words, have them define the words and learn Spanish at the same time.

MATH

Football Season Kicks Off - Get your students attention by having them learn more about the precise measurements used to produce the balls that play the game.

*The Plan: As students read more about the topic, have them convert centimeters into inches. Ask them to convert measurements of both the American football and European football as a warm-up practice this week!

Great post, I see racial self-segregation all the time, and I want to investigate the issue more thoroughly. I always find something new and interesting every time I come around here - thanks.

Alexa, I'm not sure what you are asking. Yes, there are many science resources on my blog. Go to the home page http://cuonline.blog-city.com and, looking at the left-hand column scroll, scroll, scroll down to the Science category. Thank you for stopping by.
