Sending text or voice messages to parents' mobile and land-line phones when students have unexplained absences has helped some schools in Scotland pare their truancy rates by as much as 27%, a report notes. Scottish Education Minister Hugh Henry said the alert system, if adopted by more schools, will free staff to concentrate on the 2% of pupils responsible for half the truancy.
