Jamestown-Journey of Democracy

posted Monday, 11 December 2006
The TAPPED IN Social Studies forum wraps up 2006 with a special session featuring "Jamestown-Journey of Democracy", set for Wednesday, December 13, at a special time, 7 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific).  TAPPED IN is located at http://www.tappedin.org <http://www.tappedin.org/> .

Joining us for this special session will be Daman Irby and Meg Heubeck, who will be discussing the resource.  As always, TAPPED IN help desk personne will be on hand to assist new users.  It's recommended that new users log in at least 10 minutes prior to the session in order to get to the session location.   Interested persons can either join TI (it's free), or log in as a guest for this session.

The year 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of the landing at Jamestown and the beginning of permanent English settlement in America.  To encourage teachers and students to examine the importance of this event, the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission contracted the University of Virginia Center for Politics to lead the creation of the commemoration's official education website and curriculum.  JamestownJourney.org is a collaborative effort between individuals and organizations from a variety of backgrounds. Educators, Virginia Indians, African Americans, Jamestown experts, and others have all worked together to create a unique collection of educational resources that address multiple points of view.

The official curriculum written specifically for the commemoration is composed of 12 civics lessons which challenge students to connect the experiences in Jamestown with the call for active citizenship.  Close to 100 additional resources from numerous organizations address United States history, economics, anthropology, archaeology, science, multiculturalism, mathematics and more.  All resources are provided FREE of charge to K-12 educators.

To register for Jamestown Journey's free resources visit www.jamestownjourney.org <http://www.jamestownjourney.org/>  and click on the "Sign Up" link.
