'Iron Science Teacher' Competition Series at Exploratorium's Teacher Institute

posted Tuesday, 15 July 2008

Retrieved from Converge Online, July 14, 2008

Teachers are demonstrating the X, Y and Z-axes of geometric shapes, rigging alcohol burners, explaining density and illustrating fluid dynamics -- with a soda can.

The Exploratorium, a museum of science, art and human perception, hosts the "Iron Science Teacher," a parody of the Japanese TV program Iron Chef. The show gives participants -- teachers -- 10 minutes to concoct a science experiment with a secret ingredient.

"We try to show we can do science with anything," said Dr. Linda Shore, director of the Exploratorium Teacher Institute and host of the competition. "We show teachers how to use low-tech materials to illustrate classic principles of science and math."

Iron Science Teacher is one of the Exploratorium's Teacher Institute programs, which provides teacher development for middle and high school science and math teachers. The last show for the summer 2008 series is Friday, July 18 at noon; however, people can see past competition on the Iron Science Teacher Webcast.
